ART 124: 2020-01-09 Terug by die virus…..

2020/01/09

F.H. Pretorius,
Swartruggens,
Noordwes Provinsie.

DR Congo: Ebola responders killed in armed attacks

The attacks killed an unknown number of health workers working to combat an Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dozens of workers have been evacuated due to deadly unrest near a UN peacekeeping base. (28.11.2019)

Ek wil vandag met ‘n interessante probleempie van ‘n ander korrespondent van my begin, want dit sluit aan by die onderwerp hier.  Hennie Kotze van Pretoria vra my hierdie interessante vraag op 6 Januarie 2020:

Hi Frik

(jammer as ek melodramaties klink)

Hallo Hennie,

Prieska is ‘n baie klein dorpie met waarskynlik minder as drie duisend inwoners.

Daar is egter ‘n tussentydse kitsoplossing óók.

Kom ons begin dan by Theunis Rossouw se bydrae.

DNA GUN – FUTURE BIOWEAPONS COULD KILL PEOPLE WITH SPECIFIC DNA

Future Weapons

In the future, we may have to deal with biological weapons that target specific groups of people, passing over everyone else.

That’s according to a new report out of Cambridge University’s Centre for the Study of Existential Risk reviewed by The Telegraph. In it, the Cambridge researchers argue that world governments have failed to prepare for futuristic weapons based on advanced technology like artificial intelligence and genetic manipulation — or even a killer pathogen designed to kill only people of a particular race. (my beklemtoning)

Proactive Action

The report specifically called for the creation of independent groups to assess the risks of various future technologies and sort out whatever protocols are already in place to protect people from them, per The Telegraph.

“The technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated at ever cheaper prices, democratising the ability to harm more quickly and lethally,” write the authors of the report. “In a particularly bad case, a bio-weapon could be built to target a specific ethnic group based on its genomic profile.”

Ultimately, the researchers conclude, we can’t afford to wait for those weapons to become reality before doing something about them.

Is medicine for the flu coming?

For now, the only protection we have against influenza viruses is a vacccine. When that doesn’t work, we must rely on resting, tea drinking and sweating. But we could soon be fighting the flu with an effective drug, too.

According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), about one billion people worldwide fall ill with influenza every year. In three to five million cases, the disease takes a severe course. Between 290,000 and 650,000 die as a result of the associated respiratory diseases.

A team of researchers led by the biomedical scientist Richard Plemper from Atlanta has now successfully tested an antiviral drug against influenza — but so far only in animal experiments on ferrets and in the laboratory on human airway tissue.

The compound EIDD-2801 blocks an enzyme called RNA polymerase, which plays an important role in the proliferation of viruses. As a result, the molecule triggers mutations in the genome of the virus. If enough mutations occur, the genome becomes ineffective and the virus can no longer reproduce. The physicians published their research results on October 23 in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Effective against many virus strains

“The compound is highly effecatious against influenza,” said Dr. Plemper, who teaches biomedicine at Georgia State University and developed EIDD-2801 in collaboration with colleagues at Emory University.

“It’s orally available, it’s [been tested for] a broad spectrum [of] all influenza virus strains… and most importantly, it establishes a high barrier against viral escape from inhibition.”

Among other things, the compound was also tested against the swine flu virus, which broke out worldwide in 2009.

Ferrets are very similar to humans in their reaction to influenza viruses. After treatment with the drug, they showed significantly shorter duration of fever than the animals in the control group.

No resistance observed

With previous antiviral drugs, there was always the problem that the viruses succeeded in developing resistance to the drugs through mutation. Dr. Mart Toots, one of the main authors of the study, said that it will be very difficult for the virus to escape the new medicine.

“We have not identified specific resistance mutations yet,” Dr. Plemper added. He pointed out that he was confident that “the genetic barrier against viral resistance is high”. The compound has a “high clinical potential as a next generation influenza drug,” he said.

The physicians plan to test the drug on humans for the first time next year.

Next flu pandemic ‘a matter of when, not if,’ says WHO

The World Health Organization has released a global plan to fight influenza, describing it as its most comprehensive to date. One goal is to prepare for an inevitable next flu pandemic.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday outlined a global plan for fighting influenza and trying to prevent or slow any worldwide outbreak of the viral disease, warning that the danger of a pandemic was “ever-present.”

“The question is not if we will have another pandemic, but when,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement on the WHO website. “We must be vigilant and prepared —  the cost of a major influenza outbreak will far outweigh the price of prevention.”

Among other things, Dr. Tedros warned of the risk that a new influenza virus could transmit from animals to humans to trigger such a pandemic.

“With the partnerships and country-specific work we have been doing over the years, the world is better prepared than ever before for the next big outbreak, but we are still not prepared enough,” he said. “This strategy aims to get us to that point.”

The WHO said there were an estimated 1 billion cases of flu each year, resulting in 290,000 to 650,000 respiratory deaths.

Strengthening national capacities

The United Nations agency recommends annual vaccinations to combat the disease, particularly for people working in health care and high-risk groups such as the old, the very young and those suffering from underlying illnesses.

The plan aims to build stronger national capacities to fight the disease, calling on countries to each have a special influenza program. It also wants to develop better tools for preventing, detecting, controlling and treating the disease and make these tools accessible for all countries. The anti-flu measures include vaccines and antiviral drugs.

The world’s last flu pandemic was in 2009 and 2010 and was caused by the H1N1 virus. At least one in five people across the world is thought to have been infected, with a mortality rate of around 0.02 percent, amounting to 18,500 deaths in 214 countries.

World’s biggest measles outbreak in DR Congo kills thousands

The deadly virus has killed nearly three times as many people in the Democratic Republic of Congo as any Ebola outbreak. It’s preventable with a vaccine.

The World Health Organization announced that the death toll from the Democratic Republic of Congo’s measles epidemic has surpassed 6,000, making it the world’s worst outbreak of the highly contagious disease.

The United Nations agency said that a lack of funds and low routine vaccination coverage, as well as malnutrition, were inhibiting the response to save lives and control the outbreak in the country.

They also said that weak public health systems and problems accessing vulnerable populations in the country have also “aggravated” the measles crisis.

“Lack of funding remains a huge impediment to successfully curbing the outbreak,” the WHO said in the statement.

Worsening crisis

Some 310,000 suspected cases of the measles have been reported in the central African country since the beginning of 2019. The WHO has worked with local authorities to vaccinate more than 18 million children there under the age of five.

However, in some parts of the country, particularly in remote areas, routine vaccination coverage remains low and 25% of the reported measles cases are in children over the age of five.

Vaccination rates also remain low in areas where armed groups operate.

About $28 million (€25 million) has been gathered to fight the disease, but the WHO said $40 million was needed for a six-month plan to vaccinate older children between the ages of 6 and 14.

“We are doing our utmost to bring this epidemic under control. Yet to be truly successful we must ensure that no child faces the unnecessary risk of death from a disease that is easily preventable by a vaccine,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

Contracting the deadly disease can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling and long-term disabilities.

More eyes on Ebola

The measles virus has killed almost three times as many people in DR Congo as any Ebola outbreak.

However, Ebola has gained far more international attention, especially after armed militias attacked health workers in November.

Much of the country’s health resources have been designated to handle the simultaneous outbreak of Ebola, which has become the second worst in history after the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic.

Around 2,231 people have died of Ebola since its outbreak was first identified in August 2018.

But Dr Amedee Prosper Djiguimde, director of the WHO office in DR Congo, said the country “still needs to do more” to deal with the measles epidemic.

“Thousands of Congolese families need our help to lift the burden of this prolonged epidemic from their backs. We cannot achieve this without adequate finances.”
